GOODWELL, Okla. – Playing their first game in more than four months, Wayland Baptist defeated Oklahoma-Panhandle State in the Sooner Athletic Conference opener for both teams here Tuesday, 3-2.
Wayland (3-0, 1-0 SAC), which blanked OPSU in its last game Oct. 16 by a score of 3-0, was up by that same count Tuesday before the Aggies scored twice in the last 14 minutes. OPSU (1-6) made it a one-score game with 4:50 to play, but the Aggies didn't record another shot as the Pioneer defense buckled down.
Fortune Kede was the star for the Pioneers, recording two goals and an assist. Kede first picked up her assist on a goal by Mayra Sosa some 20 minutes into the game. Kede then scored back-to-back goals within about four minutes of each other early in the second half. Bianca Roman assisted on the first.
Kede also scored goals in both of Wayland's fall matches.
Wayland outshot OPSU, 14-8, with Kede credited with six shots including three on-goal. Natalie Terry also had a shot on-goal.
Sophomore Lindsey Martinez, seeing her first-ever collegiate action in-goal, played all 90 minutes and picked up the win.
Wayland returns to Oklahoma on Saturday to take on Oklahoma City University at 1 p.m. The Stars play their first match of the season on Wednesday against Central Christian.
