Spikers push streak to 9 consecutive

McPHERSON, Kan. – With a convincing win over Central Christian here Saturday afternoon, the Wayland Baptist volleyball team matched its longest victory streak in 4½ years.

The Pioneers (9-3, 2-0 Sooner Athletic Conference) pounded the Tigers, 25-20, 25-17, 25-16, to notch a ninth-straight win, equaling the streak put together by coach Jim Giacomazzi's team in 2016. Next in the squad's sights is the 14-consecutive win streak recorded in 2014 when the Pioneers won their first of back-to-back conference tournament titles.

"Every time we play we are able to get little better. But it also gives us opportunities to evaluate to see what areas we need to improve," Giacomazzi said after his team's latest win, which followed a 25-13, 25-23, 25-15 triumph over Langston in their conference opener on Friday night.

Junior first-year transfer Skykerra Fanner enjoyed her best day as a Pioneer, doubling her previous-best kill total with eight and hitting .583. Tatijana Markic added seven kills while Paxton Patterson got six. Wayland hit .233 as a team, compared to .063 for Central Christian (2-13, 0-1).

"Shykerra had a very good day, leading us with kills and hitting percentage," Giacomazzi said. "Paxton made some adjustments today and also had eight kills, but more importantly she made adjustments without being told.

"The conversations I hear around the court during the match are showing signs of maturity. I am seeing a couple of players stepping up and showing some leadership. Players are helping each other hone their skills."

Ariel Marquez provided 16 of Wayland's 42 digs, and Kellie Kozak ended with four solo blocks. Lucie Mahelova wound up with 17 assists.

"We still missed too many serves (seven) and it cost some play time for a couple of players," Giacomazzi said.

"I am pleased with our progress. We still have a lot of work ahead for us to accommodate our goals."

The Pioneers stay on the road for their next two matches, against Science & Arts of Oklahoma and Mid-America Christian next weekend, prior to their next home match March 11 against Oklahoma-Panhandle State.
