Youngsters help No. 2 Queens to easy win

Young Flying Queens Tayjanna McGhee-Pleasant, Kaylee Rendon and Kylie Ellsworth all posted career scoring bests to lead No. 2 Wayland Baptist to a 95-46 romp over Texas Wesleyan in Sooner Athletic Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon in Hutcherson Center.

The undefeated Flying Queens (10-0, 8-0 SAC) had little trouble with the Lady Rams (1-8, 1-7), a team they narrowly escaped about a month earlier in Fort Worth, winning by just two points. In the rematch, Wayland led 22-6 after the first period before outscoring the visitors 54-19 in the second half.

McGhee-Pleasant ended with 20 points, four more than her previous best from her freshman season last year, while Rendon, a freshman this season, contributed 14, including four of Wayland's 13 3-pointers. Ellsworth, another freshman, ended with 10 points. McGhee-Pleasant, who was 9-of-13 from the field, added eight rebounds and three blocks.

Also scoring in double figures for Wayland were season scoring leaders Kaylee Edgemon with 17 and Jenna Cooper with 12. Cooper missed what would have been her fifth double-double of the season by one rebound, or three assists, as the junior turned in another well-rounded performance. So did sophomore Blakely Gerber with eight points and six boards.

The Flying Queens drilled 13-of-33 3s (39 percent), with seven players contributing to the makes. Wayland attempted just six free throws, making them all.

The Lady Rams' lone player in double figures was Makayla Coy with 16. Texas Wesleyan shot just 26 percent from the field (17-of-65) and made just 2-of-14 (14 percent) from 3-point range.

Wayland was set for showdowns against No. 7 Oklahoma City in its next two outings, including a reschedule home game Monday. But that as well as Thursday's game in OKC were cancelled due to the Stars dealing with COVID-19 issues. WBU's next scheduled game is 2 p.m. Saturday in Bethany, Okla., against Southwestern Christian, a team the Queens defeated previously this season, 66-52.
