On the heels of a pair of two-goal, one-assist matches, Wayland Baptist's
Leonardo Amaral has been named Sooner Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week.
Â
Amaral, a 5-foot-7 junior outside middle from Divinopolis, Brazil, shined as the Pioneers defeated Texas Wesleyan, 9-0, and Southwestern Assemblies of God University, 5-0. Playing at neutral site fields in Lubbock, Amaral finished the week with 10 points.
Â
Amaral scored his first goal as a Pioneer in a 5-2 victory at Central Christian on March 12, leading up to his four goals and two assists against TXWES and SAGU.
Â
A transfer from Western Texas College, Amaral joined the WBU roster prior to the spring semester. He is the second Pioneers to earn SAC Offensive Player of the Week honors after
Hector Romero was recognized three times during the fall semester season.
Â
Wayland, 9-4-1 overall and 4-2-1 in the SAC, plays its final regular-season home game at 4 p.m. Tuesday against Science and Arts of Oklahoma (7-3-3, 3-2-1). The game will be played at Berl Huffman Soccer Complex in Lubbock due to grass issues at Hilliard Field.
Â
Given the off-campus event and with COVID-19 protocol in mind, no spectators will be allowed at the match. Unfortunately, no live streaming will be available although live stats will be offered at
https://wbuathletics.com/sidearmstats/msoc/summary.
Â
Four WBU seniors –
Gonzalo Santa,
Stefano Pesce,
Elton Tettey and
Alek Martinez – will be recognized before the match.
