Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's soccer drops debut to UTPB, 2-1

ODESSA – Wayland Baptist got on the board first, but Texas-Permian Basin scored goals right before the end of each half as the Pioneer women's soccer team dropped its season-opener here Thursday, 2-1.

Senior Bianca Roman, WBU's leading goal scorer last season and an All-Sooner Athletic Conference second teamer, put the Pioneers up 1-0 with a goal in the 23rd minute, assisted by senior Mayra Sosa.

The NCAA Division II Falcons, using the match as a scrimmage, tied it with a goal by Alex Sanchez one second before intermission.

UTPB then took the lead with a goal by Maddison Carriello 5½ minutes before the end of regulation.

Wayland was unable to get a shot off the rest of the way.

The Falcons outshot the Pioneers, 11-5, with two of Wayland's shots on-goal compared to eight for UTPB. Roman took three of Wayland's shots while Reagan Cordell and Sosa got one each.

Freshman Kanada Morita was in goal for Wayland and recorded six saves.

The WBU men also faced UTPB, with both teams opting to use the match as a scrimmage.

Wayland next plays University of the Southwest in what will be its home-opener at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4.
