VICTORIA – After watching the WBU women's soccer team pull out a double-overtime win over Houston-Victoria, the Pioneer men's team was hoping to match it. Instead, the Jaguars managed to get the golden goal midway through the second extra period.
Wayland (2-2) took a 2-0 lead, getting goals from
Marco Magnoli just 7½ minutes into the match and by
Leonardo Amaral in the 54
th minute. But the unbeaten Jags (3-0) hung tough, getting on the board with a goal by Winner Assi in the 61
st minute then tying it with a goal by Irankunda Bosco with just 96 seconds left in regulation.
Wayland's first overtime match of the season ended when Gabriel Rojas scored on the lone shot of the second overtime.
The Pioneers were outshot, 15-11, with the Jags holding an 8-5 edge on on-goal shots. Nine different WBU players got off shots, with
Ryan Naidoo and Amaral firing two each.
Kade Tomlinson was in-goal the entire match for WBU, recording five saves.
Next for WBU is a noon match Monday at Huston-Tillotson in Austin. The Rams won their season-opener over Schreiner, 3-1, but fell Friday to NCAA Division I Houston Baptist, 6-0.
