Wayland Baptist cornerback
Devron Sims has been named Sooner Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

A 6-foot-1, 180-pound freshman from Childress, Sims helped the Pioneers to a 38-18 road win over Texas College by grabbing two of Wayland's program-record seven interceptions. Sims also was credited with a team-high six tackles and three pass break-ups.

Sims was part of a defensive effort that, according to statistics kept by WBU coaches, allowed Texas College 136 total yards, including no rushing yards on 19 attempts and 136 passing yards on 10-of-49 attempts. The Pioneers allowed just one third-down conversion in 20 attempts and one fourth-down conversion on six tries.

Sims is the first WBU player to be honored as a SAC player of the week this season.

The Pioneers (2-2, 1-1 SAC) next travel to Fort Worth to take on Texas Wesleyan (2-1, 2-1) at 2 p.m. Saturday.
