Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Pioneers avenge close loss with lopsided win

Having fallen by five points in Kansas in their first meeting, the Wayland Baptist Pioneers were anxious to make amends in the rematch with Central Christian College on Thursday night in Hutcherson Center.

They did, and then some.

Parrish Hewitt hit 20 points and RJ Mason 16 to lead Wayland to an impressive 86-55 Sooner Athletic Conference win over the Tigers.

The Pioneers (11-11, 7-8 SAC) raced to an 18-7 lead after four quick 3-pointers from Mason, Hewitt and Jaxon Recer. WBU made another push late in the first half, going on a 10-0 run that was fueled by two bombs from Josh Servantez that put WBU up by 21, 46-25.

The Tigers (10-12, 4-11) scored the first bucket of the second half to get to within 16, but that's as close as they came. Wayland gradually extended its lead to as many as 33, 86-53, with just over a minute left.

The Pioneers launched a season-high 30 3-pointers, hitting 11 of them, which matched the second-most on the season. Mason threw in four 3s while Servantez got three.
WBU committed a season-low six turnovers, by far its cleanest game since having eight in the season-opener.

Ten of Wayland's 13 players scored.

Next, the Pioneers will be looking for a sweep against Langston (1-19, 0-13), a team Wayland defeated in the first half of SAC play, 69-58. The last-place Lions lost a close one to Oklahoma-Panhandle State on the road Thursday, 90-86.
