Pioneers can't catch up, fall to La. Christian

PINEVILLE, La. – Wayland Baptist trailed 21-0 at halftime before outscoring Louisiana Christian in the second half as the Pioneers fell in Sooner Athletic Conference play at Wildcat Field here Saturday afternoon, 37-17.

The Pioneers (2-5, 2-4 SAC) surrendered a pair of 24-yard touchdown passes in the first quarter then a four-yard TD run with 2:20 left before halftime.

An interception by Corey McCoy on the second play of the second half led to a short field goal from Brayden Welch to get the Pioneers on the board.

It took the Wildcats (3-4, 2-3) just four plays to score their fourth touchdown on a 16-yard pass to make it 28-3 still early in the third.

On the first play after the ensuing kickoff, a 72-yard scamper by Wayland's Willie Phillips provided the Pioneers with their first touchdown, but once against Louisiana Christian answered with its own TD to make it 34-10 now midway through the third.

The Wildcats tacked on a short field goal midway through the fourth before Wayland concluded the scoring on a 16-yard pass from Davian Guajardo to Kamron Williams with 3:41 left in the game.

Guajardo, a freshman from Denton, completed 11-of-16 passes for 104 yards with a TD and an interception in his most extensive action of the season. Tanner Ballew was 1-of-5 with a pick.

Phillips finished with 128 rushing yards on 10 carries, while Isaiah Baker hauled in five catches for 62 yards.

Gabriel Tito led Wayland's defense with nine tackles (five solo). Andrew Villa added eight stops with a sack.

The Pioneers are idle next week before hosting Southwestern Assemblies of God University (3-3, 2-3) at 2 p.m. Oct. 29. The Lions defeated Oklahoma-Panhandle State on Saturday in Waxahachie, 41-18.
