Pioneers get through tough weekend

WBU faces SAC's top two teams

The good news is the Wayland Baptist volleyball team won't have to face Texas Wesleyan or Southwestern Assemblies of God University the rest of the regular-season.

A day after facing ninth-ranked, unbeaten SAGU in Hutcherson Center, the Pioneers took on No. 24 Texas Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon. Much like on Friday night when the Lady Lions pulled off the sweep, the Lady Rams won in three, 25-21, 25-21, 25-17.

"We didn't win this weekend, but I feel like we got better," Wayland coach Jim Giacomazzi said. "Much like SAGU, Texas Wesleyan is a very good team, and we just weren't able to match up with them."

Wayland (6-13, 6-8 Sooner Athletic Conference) fell to TXWES in the first half of conference play Sept. 9 in Fort Worth, 25-10, 25-9, 25-18. The rematch was much closer, although the Pioneers never held a lead but were within striking distance much of the way.

After falling behind 7-1 in game one, Wayland rallied to tie it at 14. But TXWES (19-3, 3-1) won the next four points – on a pair of WBU hitting errors, a kill and an ace – and was able to close it out, 25-21.

Game two was back-and-forth until the Lady Rams broke a 20-20 deadlock with another four-point run – three kills and an ace – and again closed out a 25-21 final.

In game three, it was 3-3 when the visitors from Fort Worth went on an 11-3 run to take command, going on to easily win, 25-17.

Fade Ogunbade led Wayland with 11 kills and three block-assists, with Alexa Hinojosa adding nine kills and three block-assists and Chante Moore added eight and three. Samantha Ingram and Dayana Critchi recorded 14 digs each, Elizabeth Wirth 10 and Brenna Daniel nine. Ingram provided 26 assists.

TXWES got 10 kills each from Sydney Charlton and Kendal King. Andrea Malek posted 25 digs, and the Lady Rams produced six aces along with two solo and 14 block-assists. Wayland had no aces and one solo and a dozen block-assists.

The Pioneers hit the road for their next two matches – Oklahoma-Panhandle State (14-8, 7-6) on Tuesday and third-place John Brown (16-5, 11-3) on Friday – before their next home match Oct. 28 against Central Christian. In the first half of conference, WBU lost to OPSU in four and to JBU in three.
