Hoping to pick up a win for a likely program-record 15 honorees on Senior Night, the Wayland Baptist men's soccer team couldn't get it done and fell to the University of Science & Arts Drovers in Sooner Athletic Conference action Tuesday at Hilliard Field, 4-1.
A shocking USAO goal just 37 seconds into the second half broke a 1-1 tie, and the Drovers (8-4-3, 3-2-2 SAC) – playing a man-up most of the second half – went on to add two more scores in a four-minute frame, snapping the Pioneers' two-game win streak and denying Wayland (6-6-2, 3-3-1) a win in its final regular-season home outing.
The Pioneers got off just six shots and only one on target, which was the goal by
Leonardo Amaral in the 38
th minute. Amaral shot from some 20 yards out on a sharp angle after a feed from
Santiago Hernandez.
That evened the score after USAO scored 9:59 into the match.
The Drovers took 15 shots, seven of which were on-goal.
WBU ends the regular-season Saturday afternoon in Bethany, Okla., against second-place Southwestern Christian (6-3-4, 4-1-3), which is one of four teams in the SAC standings with four wins behind leader Mid-America Christian. Wayland currently stands in sixth place, which means the Pioneers are on the outside looking in in the race to finish among the top four teams and earn a first-round home game in the upcoming conference tournament.
