BETHANY, Okla. – The Wayland Baptist men's and women's soccer teams wrapped up the regular-seasons here Saturday afternoon, but not in the fashion either wanted. Taking on Southwestern Christian in Sooner Athletic Conference action, the Pioneers came away with a pair of 1-0 losses.
In the women's match, Southwestern Christian scored the lone goal in the 67
th minute. The Lady Eagles had only one other shot on-goal the rest of the match.
Wayland was unable to score on any of its 10 shots, half of which were on-goal but kept out of the net by Lady Eagle goalie Celeste Lucio.
Ajacia Mojica led the Pioneers with three shots, while
Reagan Cordell had two on-goal.
It was the Pioneers' sixth shutout on the season but first in six matches.
Wayland (4-7-4, 3-4-2 SAC) finished in sixth place in the conference standings, just ahead of SCU (4-7-4, 2-5-2). The Pioneers will play the No. 3 seed – either Oklahoma City (10-2-4, 5-1-2) or Mid-America Christian (6-9-2, 5-2-2) – in the first round of the SAC Tournament next Friday in Oklahoma City.
In the men's match, the Eagles scored the lone goal with just nine seconds left before halftime.
Both teams took 13 shots, with Wayland putting five on-goal and the Eagles six.
Bryan Alfaro's four shots – including two on-target – paced the Pioneers.
"It was a very strange game," WBU coach
Robert Ssejjemba said. "We had the ball so much in their half and created so much, but we couldn't finish."
Like the WBU women, it was the sixth shutout for the Pioneer men, but first in the last five matches.
"Our focus now switches to the playoffs," Ssejjemba said.
That begins in one week when the Pioneers (6-8-2, 3-5-1 SAC), the No. 8 seed, takes on top-seeded and third-ranked Mid-America Christian (14-1-2, 7-0-2) next Saturday in Oklahoma City at a time to be determined. WBU played at MACU to open conference play on Sept. 27 and fell, 3-0.
