Volleyballers win 5th in a row over USAO

Pioneers meet MACU Saturday back in Chickasha

CHICKASHA, Okla. – A month after surviving in five at home against University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma, the Wayland Baptist volleyball team made quick work of the Drovers on their home court Friday night, winning 25-19, 25-22, 25-14.

Wayland took command of the match from the beginning, opening a 9-1 lead to start. The Pioneers trailed for the first time in game two, falling behind 13-10. WBU came out of a timeout and took charge, going on an 8-2 run to assume an 18-15 lead. It was tied at 20 when the Pioneers got a kill by Alexa Hinojos and back-to-back aces by Maria Eduarda Motta. A kill by Carlee Heidebrecht then an attack error by USAO ended it, 25-22.

The Drovers seemed to lose their drive after that as Wayland against jumped out to a 9-1 lead in the third. The match ended on a kill by Hinojos, 25-14.

Wayland hit .264, led by Fade Ogunbade (.444), Hinojos (.438) and Chante Moore (.400), who had four, nine and eight kills, respectively. Ogunbade contributed four of the Pioneers' dozen block-assists, while Dayana Critchi paced the team with 15 digs. Samantha Ingram recorded 19 assists, while WBU ended with seven aces, two each by Critchi, Motta and Hinojos.

The win was the fourth straight for Wayland (6-10, 6-5 Sooner Athletic Conference). It's the second-longest streak in the league, behind the 19-match streak of unbeaten Southwestern Assemblies of God University (19-0, 11-0).

The Pioneers return to USAO's floor Saturday to take on Mid-America Christian (12-9, 6-4), which opted to play in Chickasha instead of on its campus in Oklahoma City. WBU and MACU meet after USAO hosts Oklahoma-Panhandle State at 1.

MACU, which took on OPSU Friday night, defeated Wayland in Plainview on Sept. 2, 17-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-22, 15-5.
