Box Score GOODWELL, Okla. – Wayland Baptist got in the end zone on its first possession of the day, but the Pioneers couldn't punch it in again and fell to Oklahoma-Panhandle State here Saturday afternoon, 38-10.
The Pioneers (2-3, 2-2 Sooner Athletic Conference) took a 7-0 lead when
Willie Phillips scored from one yard out to cap a 10-play, 71-yard drive to start the game.
OPSU (3-3, 3-2) answered with a 17-yard field goal on its first possession then took the lead with a touchdown on possession number two with a 16-yard pass that came after a 46-yard bomb.
The Pioneers tied it when
Brayden Welch kicked a 27-yard field goal early in the second period. That was all the scoring Wayland would manage.
Less than two minutes later, the Aggies took the lead for good on a 10-yard TD toss, taking a 17-10 lead into halftime.
A WBU interception helped set up OPSU's first second-half score, a 30-yard run. A halfback pass on 3
rd-and-7 from the Wayland 10 resulted in OPSU's next touchdown midway through the third, giving the Aggies a 31-10 lead.
Another halfback pass, this one on 1
st-and-goal from the 2, completed the scoring late I the third.
Wayland's
Tyrel McCalester and
Corey McCoy intercepted passes for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers head to Pinevilla, La., next Saturday to take on Louisiana Christian (2-4, 1-3), which defeated Arkansas Baptist in a non-conference game Saturday, 48-14. That came on the heels of a 28-16 loss to OPSU. Louisiana Christian's other win came over Arizona Christian, 40-26.
