Soccer teams both face MACU in Oklahoma City to open post-season

Both Wayland Baptist men's and women's soccer teams will face Mid-America Christian on the road in the opening round of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournaments. The Pioneer women take on the Evangels at 2 p.m. Thursday at Dill Field in Oklahoma City while the WBU men will be in action at 7 p.m. Saturday.

SAC Tournament matches will be contested on campus sites hosted by the higher seeds. The women's quarterfinals were moved up a day in order to avoid inclement weather in the forecast.

On the women's side, Wayland (4-7-4, 3-4-2 SAC) is seeded No. 6 in the eight-team field, while MACU (6-9-2, 5-2-2) is the No. 3 seed. Thursday's match will be a repeat of the teams' conference opener on Sept. 27 in Oklahoma City, which ended in a scoreless tie. Wayland managed a tie despite being outshot, 24-9, as Pioneer keeper Kanade Morita stopped all five on-goal shots by the Evangels. WBU had two on-target shots.

Thursday's winner advances to the semifinals against either NAIA 21st-ranked John Brown (12-4, 8-1), the No. 2 seed, or seventh-seeded Southwestern Christian (4-7-4, 2-5-2). The highest remaining seed will host the match, so a Wayland win likely would send the Pioneers back to Siloam Springs, Ark., a familiar post-season landing place for WBU in recent seasons.

As SAC regular-season champion, Science & Arts of Oklahoma (14-1-1, 9-0) collected the top seed in the tournament and hosts beginning Friday. The Drovers, ranked No. 20 in the NAIA, host Southwestern Assemblies of God (4-11-2) at 7 p.m. The winner of that game advances to meet the winner between No. 4 Oklahoma City (10-3-4) and No. 5 Texas Wesleyan (6-10).

Quarterfinal winners reach the semifinals Monday, Nov. 7, while the SAC Tournament championship will be decided Thursday, Nov. 10. The tournament winner reaches the NAIA Championships, which starts with the Opening Round on Nov. 17-19.

In the men's SAC Tournament, Wayland (6-8-2, 3-5-1 SAC) gets another crack Saturday evening at the NAIA's second-ranked team, Mid-America Christian (14-1-2, 7-0-2). The Pioneers were shut out by the Evangels, 3-0, when they squared off in late September in OKC.

MACU owns a 15-0-3 record in conference matches since falling 1-0 to Southwestern Christian on March 23, 2021. The Evangels captured last year's SAC Tournament crown with a 2-0 victory against Southwestern Christian in Oklahoma City. Mid-America rolled through the tournament with three shutouts, outscoring foes, 10-0.

The WBU-MACU winner advances to play either fourth-seeded John Brown (9-3-3) or fifth-seeded Texas Wesleyan (12-5), who play at 6 p.m. Saturday in Siloam Springs.

On the other side of the bracket, second-seeded Southwestern Christian (7-3-4) hosts No. 7 seed Central Christian (9-5-4) while sixth-seeded OCU (10-6-1) travels to No. 3 seed Science & Arts (10-4-3).

Each contest in the tournament will take place at the higher seeded team's home field. The tournament semifinals will be Tuesday, Nov. 8, and the championship game is set for Friday, Nov. 11. The SAC Tournament champion earns its way into the NAIA Championships, which begin with the NAIA Championship Opening Round on Nov. 17-19 at campus sites.
