BETHANY, Okla. – Cheered on by Wayland Baptist's men's cross country and soccer teams, the Pioneer volleyball team closed the regular-season with a 3-1 win over Southwestern Christian here Saturday, 20-25, 26-24, 25-19, 25-20.
Wayland (9-16, 9-11 Sooner Athletic Conference) rallied from two sets down when these teams met Sept. 30 in Plainview. This time, the Pioneers only dropped the first set before getting it in gear.
WBU almost lost the second set this time, too. After trailing 18-14, the Pioneers went on a seven-point run to assume a 24-19 lead. But the Eagles (10-18, 4-15) fought off five set points to tie it. It was similar to Friday night against Oklahoma City when Wayland led the fourth 24-21, only to see the Stars go on a 6-1 match-ending run.
On Saturday, though, Wayland didn't throw in the towel when the Lady Eagles tied it at 24. Instead,
Fade Ogunbade came up with a kill before
Brenna Daniel served up an ace to tie the match at 1-all.
WBU controlled much of the rest of the match and went on to a third win in four matches.
Ogunbade put down a season-high 16 kills while hitting .333.
Carlee Heidebrecht added 11 kills (.278), her most in eight outings.
Alexa Hinojos matched her season-best with eight block-assists, one more than
Chante Moore. Daniel posted three aces and 25 digs, closing the regular-season with five straight double-digit dig matches.
Samantha Ingram added 14 digs and
Maria Eduarda Motta 13.
The Pioneers already were locked into the No. 7 spot for the upcoming SAC Tournament and will take on second-seeded, 23
rd-ranked Texas Wesleyan on Tuesday in Fort Worth. The Lady Rams swept Wayland in both regular-season meetings, 25-10, 25-9, 25-18 in early September in Fort Worth and 25-21, 25-21, 25-17 in Plainview on Oct. 15.
