SW Christian knocks off Flying Queens in OT

Southwestern Christian got double-digit scoring from five players and, in overtime, knocked off the Wayland Baptist Flying Queens in Sooner Athletic Conference play Thursday evening at Hutcherson Center, 81-77.

The Lady Eagles (4-4, 2-1 SAC) rallied from an 11-point deficit early in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Flying Queens (5-4, 1-2) 24-13 in the fourth quarter, including 22-4 during one stretch. Wayland trailed 66-59 with just over two minutes left in regulation but managed to score the final seven points, including a 3-pointer by sophomore Kynnan Shields with 20 seconds to play.

SCU missed a late shot and the Queens were awarded the ball out of bounds with 8/10ths of a second to play. Wayland called back-to-back timeouts and got the ball in the frontcourt, but a quickly-launched 3-pointer from the corner missed the mark, forcing the Queens' first overtime in three years.

WBU figured to have the advantage in the extra period after SCU saw two key players, Christina Jenkins (13 points, eight rebounds) and Jaden Mason (11 points, five rebounds) foul out in the fourth, but the rest of the Lady Eagles stepped up their play.

After winning the overtime tip, the Lady Eagles scored on their first two possessions and never trailed. Following a couple of missed shots and a turnover by Wayland, SCU owned a six-point lead, 74-68, but Wayland cut it to 76-74 on 3-pointers by Jenna Cooper-Jackson and Shields.

The Lady Eagles answered with a 3 from Delaney Reimer, but Wayland came back with a 3 by Kaitlyn Edgemon that made it 79-77 with 27 seconds showing. SCU managed to run 20 seconds off the clock before Wayland fouled, and MJ Case made both of her free throws with seven seconds to go to ice it. Wayland missed a late 3-pointer, and the Lady Eagles had secured the upset.

Jackson finished with 29 points (her most since a career-high 37 against Southwestern Assemblies of God University last season) and Edgemon 20, but no other Queen reached double figures. Taryn Shultz recorded nine points and Shields eight along with six rebounds, while Ashlyn Shelley dished out 10 assists.

SCU was led by Lauren Wade, who hit 7-of-10 field goals for her 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Case, who made 8-of-10 free throws, also got 15 points. Jenkins and Reimer, who came off the bench, put in 13 each, while Mason tacked on 11.

The Lady Eagles out-rebounded Wayland 44-34, in large part because they shot 53 percent from the field (30-of-57, 7-of-13 3s) compared to Wayland's 40 percent (29-of-73, 10-of-27 3s). SCU missed just three of its 17 foul shots (82 percent) while the Queens shot a season-worst 60 percent (9-of-15) from the stripe.

Wayland, which went from a No. 11 ranking to not receiving any Top 25 votes in the latest NAIA poll, has dropped back-to-back games for the first time since the 2018-19 season. The Queens will try to avoid a third-straight setback Saturday when they host 20th-ranked, unbeaten Mid-America Christian (8-0, 3-0) at 2 p.m. MACU edged Oklahoma-Panhandle State on Thursday in Goodwell, 69-68.
