Basketball players
Angel Hayden and
Jibrael Washington have been named Wayland Baptist University Student-Athletes of the Week.
Hayden pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds in addition to scoring seven points and dishing out eight assists in the No. 12 Flying Queens' 94-64 win over Oklahoma City University. It marked the sixth time this season Hayden, a senior point-guard from Canyon, has reached double-digits on the boards.
The win was the second most-lopsided victory in the 70-plus game series against OCU.
Washington became the Pioneers' all-time leader in blocked shots when he swatted nine in a 70-57 victory over OCU. It was the second straight game in which Washington, a 6-foot-8 senior center from Waco, reached his career-high with nine blocks, also doing it a week earlier against Langston.
Deng D'Awol held the Pioneers' record for career blocks with 158 from 1998-2001. In his third season, Washington now has 167 blocked shots.
With 71 blocks on the season, Washington ranks fifth in the NAIA.
