Queens do it with defense in win over JBU

Wayland Baptist turned in its lowest point total of the season but still won by a comfortable 15 points as the No. 12 Flying Queens defeated John Brown University on Monday evening at Hutcherson Center, 61-46.

Wayland (24-3, 16-2 SAC) went up by a dozen points early in the second quarter, and John Brown (13-13, 9-9) cut it to single digits just once after that. The Queens held a 14-point, 32-18 lead at the half, and the margin stayed between 11-16 points the rest of the way.

Kaitlyn Edgemon paced Wayland in scoring with 19 points, followed by Kaylee Edgemon with 14 and Jenna Cooper with 12. Angel Hayden once again paced the Flying Queens on the boards with a dozen rebounds.

Neither team enjoyed much offensive success, with Wayland hitting 31 percent from the field, including 23 percent (6-of-26) from 3-point range, and John Brown just 28 percent overall and 19 percent (5-of-27) from beyond the arc. WBU did sink 13-of-15 free throws, including 7-of-8 by Kaylee Edgemon.

JBU junior forward Tarrah Stephens, who on Saturday broke three program records when she scored 45 points in a 78-73 overtime win at Oklahoma Panhandle State, was limited to 12 points and was the only Golden Eagle with more than nine.

Wayland ended with 15 second-chance points while JBU got only one.

The league-leading Flying Queens are back on the road to finish off the week, starting Thursday in Fort Worth when Wayland takes on third-place Texas Wesleyan (19-4, 13-4). The Rams fell on the road Monday against Langston, 71-61. The Queens defeated TXWES when they met in Plainview Jan .8, 88-80.
