Bass' new team wins opener; 3 games left

ARLINGTON – In the first Wayland Baptist baseball game pitting a former coach against the Pioneers, the former coach's team won.
 
Arlington Baptist got a complete-game pitching effort and Wayland matched a season-high by committing six errors as the Pioneers fell to the Patriots in the opener of a four-game series here Thursday, 10-4.
 
The game saw Arlington Baptist coach Brad Bass going against the team he coached for the previous 24 seasons.
 
In windy conditions, the Patriots jumped out in front early and stayed there, scoring four in the first and two in each of their next three at-bats to plate all of their 10 runs prior to the fifth.
 
Wayland tallied a pair of runs in each of the third and fifth frames.
 
The Pioneers got three hits from Jack Kolich, Dawin Santos and Brock Webber, including a home run by Santos who finished with four RBIs. Jake Green had a pair of hits and scored a pair of runs.
 
Wayland used four pitchers, with starter Victor Feliz absorbing the loss as he allowed four runs on seven hits in 1 1/3 innings. Garrett McClain turned in four strong innings, surrendering two runs on three hits.
 
Ryan Blair went the distance for the Patriots, allowing 13 hits while striking out eight and walking three.
 
The Pioneers fell to 14-9; the Patriots' record was not immediately available.
 
The teams will meet for a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m. Friday, after the junior varsity teams play at 11:30 a.m. WBU's J.V. won Thursday, 15-8. The varsity series winds up with a single game at noon Saturday.
