GOODWELL, Okla. –
Dawin Santos and
Jake Green combined for seven hits and seven RBIs, and
Gloymer Cuevas turned in a solid pitching performance to lead Wayland Baptist to a 13-1, 8-inning Sooner Athletic Conference victory over Oklahoma-Panhandle State here Friday afternoon.
The win – on the heels of Thursday's results: a 5-1 WBU victory that followed a 7-6, nine-inning loss – gave the Pioneers (21-17, 6-12 SAC) their second series win in a row and alone in sixth place in the league standings. OPSU fell to 13-27, 5-13 and into seventh place.
The Pioneers pounded out 16 hits, their sixth straight game in double-digits and the most for the team since a season-high 19 in a 16-15 loss to Oklahoma City on March 5.
Wayland had five multi-run innings, starting with a three-run first and ending with three-run seventh and eighth frames. In between, the Pioneers plated two in each of the third and sixth innings.
Meanwhile, Wayland starting pitcher
Gloymer Cuevas was sharp in seven innings, allowing just a single run in the fifth. He scattered eight hits and logged four strikeouts and four walks before giving way to
Connor Leach who pitched the eighth, striking out two.
The game ended an inning early on the 10-run rule as a result of Santos belting a three-run homer in the eighth. It was Santos' team-high 11
th homer of the season, and his five RBIs – which matched a season-best – gave him a team-leading 44.
The series represented the final road games of the regular-season for Wayland, which will play its final 10 games at home starting with a doubleheader against Jarvis Christian at noon Tuesday. WBU's series next weekend against No. 12 Science & Arts of Oklahoma tentatively has been moved to a doubleheader at 4 p.m. Thursday and a single game at 2 p.m. Friday.
