Cuevas, Webber spark Pioneers to 3rd straight win

Wayland Baptist benefited from yet another strong pitching performance from Gloymer Cuevas and Brock Webber homered twice as the Pioneers completed a three-game sweep of Central Christian (Kan.) with an 8-3 win Saturday afternoon at Wilder Field.

Coming off 10-2 and 9-5 wins Friday when Tanner Solomon struck out a career-high 14 and Ty Jackson eight in seven-inning, complete-game efforts, Wayland (19-16, 4-11 Sooner Athletic Conference) got an 11-strikeout performance from Cuevas, who allowed the Tigers (8-26, 2-13) just two hits and walked only one in seven scoreless innings. The 11 Ks were a season-best for Cuevas, almost doubling his previous-high this season of six, and matched his career-high first established last season against Oklahoma City.

After Cuevas left after the seventh, Connor Leach and Chase Jones tag-teamed the eighth before Jose Suero struck out the side – and then some – in the ninth. Suero logged four strikeouts in his single inning of work thanks to a pass ball on fan No. 3 that allowed the batter to board.

Combined, the Pioneers pitchers recorded 16 Ks, two off the school record set last season against Oklahoma-Panhandle State when Suero and Deric Trevino combined to sit down 18 Aggies.

Webber slapped a pair of solo home runs in the fourth and fifth innings, making the most of breezy conditions throughout the afternoon. The designated hitter/catcher also homered Friday, giving him three for the weekend after having gone homerless in 83 previous at-bats this season.

The Pioneers ended with a dozen hits off four Tiger pitchers. Besides Webber, Tyler Latham, Hayden Ingram and Dawin Santos also had two hits each. Jake Green matched Webber's two RBIs.

Wayland clung to a 1-0 lead before erupting for six runs in the fourth. Jack Kolich got that inning going with a lead-off double. After Santos walked, Danny Arambula delivered an RBI-double that wound up clearing the bases thanks to a bad throw that ended up in the Central Christian dugout.

The Tigers changed pitchers and Webber greeted him with his first homer. Justin Porter followed with a single, Latham and Ingram drew back-to-back walks and Green drove in a run with a groundout to second to complete the inning's scoring.

All that remained was another home run by Webber in the fifth.

Held to two hits by Cuevas through seven innings, the Tigers finally got on the board in the eighth thanks to a single, two walks and a bases-loaded double.

The Pioneers play a non-conference doubleheader against Jarvis Christian in Hawkins at noon Tuesday before returning to SAC play next weekend in Goodwell, Okla., against Panhandle State (12-25, 4-11). The Pioneers and Aggies are tied for sixth place in the conference standings after OPSU was swept by 12th-ranked Science & Arts this weekend, 12-2, 16-5 and 6-4.

WBU is back home April 19 in a doubleheader against Jarvis before a home series against Science & Arts.
