The 2022-23 Wayland Baptist sports season opens this week in Arizona where the volleyball team and men's and women's soccer teams are in action.
Play gets under way today in Surprise, Ariz. The volleyball team takes on No. 17 Ottawa-Arizona in the opening match of the OUAZ Invitational. First serve is at 7:30 p.m. Central time. Also today, the women's soccer team meets Ottawa at 8 p.m. Central followed by the Pioneer men at 10.
On Friday, the volleyball team plays twice, first against Park-Gilbert (Ariz.) at noon then against Carroll (Mont.) at 5. The Pioneers wrap up the tournament against Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) at 11 a.m. Saturday.
The soccer teams will be in Glendale, Ariz., for the weekend to go against Arizona Christian. The women take the pitch at 10 p.m. Central Friday with the men having their turn at noon Saturday.
The Pioneer football team was scheduled to scrimmage Sul Ross State in Andrews on Saturday, but that has been cancelled due to SRSU transportation issues. The Pioneers kick off the season at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 3 by hosting Hardin-Simmons in the first of four home games over the initial five weeks of the season.
