SURPRISE, Ariz. – Playing in the desert for the second time in as many days, the Wayland Baptist women's soccer team came up with a 1-1 tie against Arizona Christian on Friday night.
The tie for Wayland (0-1-1) came on the heels of a 5-0 season-opening loss to Ottawa (Ariz.) on Thursday. Arizona Christian moved to 0-2-1.
New NAIA rules stipulate no overtime in regular-season matches.
The Pioneers trailed 1-0 at the half after Miranda Castro scored for the Firestorm in the 34
th minute.
Wayland tied it when
Jazmyne Cooper, a freshman from Lovington, N.M., scored the Pioneers' first goal of the season in the 55
th minute.
Bruna Moureira was credited with the assist.
Neither team was able to knock another in the net. The Pioneers fended off several scoring chances by the Firestorm and were unable to capitalize on a prime opportunity late in the match.
WBU was outshot, 19-10, with the Firestorm getting two more shots on-goal, 8-6. Gonzalez took four of Wayland's shots, half of which were on-target.
Kanade Morita recorded all seven of the Pioneers' saves.
