ODESSA –
Maya Conde scored her first goal as a Pioneer, and
Kanade Morita saved three penalty kick attempts as Wayland Baptist notched its second straight 1-1 tie against Texas-Permian Basin here Friday evening.
"After a very lackluster start and giving up one goal, the women played a much-energized second half, scoring a tying goal, to finish 1-1 with UTPB," Wayland coach
Shiloh Posey said after the match which included about a 45-minute weather delay.
After giving up a goal in the 37
th minute on the rebound after a saved PK, Wayland (0-1-2) got the equalizer 3½ minutes into the second half when Conde connected.
The Pioneers managed a tie (they also tied Arizona Christian last week) despite getting off just three shots, all of which were on-goal. Besides Conde's goal, other shots came from
Abrysha Walker and
Ajacia Mojica.
The Falcons (2-0-1) – who defeated University of the Southwest, 4-0, and Sul Ross State, 1-0, in their first two outings of the season – managed a dozen shots, eight of which were on-goal as Morita finished with seven saves.
"Kanade's three PK saves kept us in the game," Posey said. "Everyone contributed to the night and put in some quality minutes.
"Although we struggled in the first half, the ladies were able to flip the mental switch at halftime/rain delay and came out completely ready to compete."
The Pioneers make their home debut Tuesday, hosting Our Lady of the Lake (1-0) at 6 p.m. The Saints won their season-opener Friday at home against Kansas Wesleyan, 2-1.
"We've got several things to work on, but the second half was a good way to finish a tough game," Posey said. "I'm pleased with that effort, and we look forward to our first home game on Tuesday."
