Wayland Baptist was able to answer Our Lady of the Lake's first goal, but the Pioneers couldn't match the Saints' next four as OLLU prevailed in women's soccer on Tuesday afternoon at Hilliard Field, 5-1.
"I thought the first half was pretty solid for us, but we had some breakdowns in the second half we need to work on," Wayland coach
Shiloh Posey said.
After Kyleigh Spree-Kolos of the Saints (2-0) scored 9½ minutes into the match, it took Wayland (0-2-2) less than five minutes to tie it up on an impressive 25-yard shot by
Chloe Marmitt that bounced in after hitting the left post.
Taylor DeSantiago got the assist.
It appeared the teams would go into halftime tied at 1, but with just 23 seconds left before the break OLLU's Ez Valles got free and scored from 15 yards away.
The Saints made it 3-0 when Spree-Kolos scored her second goal seven minutes into the second half. Some 3½ minutes after that, Ambree Rheinberger put the Saints up 4-1, then Spree-Kolos notched a hat trick with her third goal in the 67
th minute.
Posey said it's difficult to win while being outshot 18-7 like Wayland was.
Natalie Terry took three of Wayland's shots, including the only other on-goal attempt.
Reigning Sooner Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week
Kanade Morita logged seven saves.
The Pioneers will try to pick up their first victory Saturday in Hobbs, N.M., against University of the Southwest (0-2), which has lost to SAC teams University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma (1-0) and Mid-America Christian (3-1).
"We have to have a short memory and go play again on Saturday," Posey said.
