Tobi McCoy scored her first goal as a Pioneer, and Wayland Baptist was able to turn it into its first victory of the season as the women's soccer team prevailed over Huston-Tillotson on Saturday evening at Hilliard Field, 1-0.
The win came in Wayland's final outing before Sooner Athletic Conference play begins in 10 days.
The lone score of the match came 5½ minutes after halftime when Grace Arteaga booted the ball out to Reagan Cordell on the right wing. Cordell sent it perfectly into the box where McCoy – a first-year junior transfer from Arkansas-Pine Bluff – deflected it just inside the right post from the top of the goal area.
That was the only score needed as Wayland's defense limited the Rams (1-1-1) to just two shots the entire match. Kanade Morita saved the only shot on-goal she faced.
Meanwhile, Wayland (1-3-2) got off 14 shots, five by McCoy. Three of the Pioneers' shots were on-target, including a pair by McCoy. Francisca Gonzalez had WBU's other shot on-goal, while Natalie Terry was credited with three shots.
The Pioneers were scheduled to host Arlington Baptist on Thursday, but that match was cancelled due to issues at ABU. That means Wayland will have 10 days off before its SAC opener against Mid-America Christian (1-6) in Oklahoma City on Sept. 27. WBU's next home match is Sept. 30 against No. 12 John Brown (3-2).
