Wayland Baptist's men's soccer team picked up its initial win of the season, running its record to 1-1-1 as the Pioneers downed Texas College on Saturday evening in their home-opening match at Hilliard Field, 2-0.
Wayland's goals – a 10-yard header by
Santiago Hernandez and a 25-yard rocket shot by
Bryan Alfaro – came within 44 seconds of each other in the 10
th minute of the match.
Playing at home for the first time in 2022 after Wednesday's game was cancelled by rain, the Pioneers dominated possession the entire way, taking 27 shots compared to only two for the Steers. Seven of Wayland's shots were on-goal.
"I thought it was a controlled performance from start to finish," WBU coach
Robert Ssejjemba said. "With the amount of possession we had, we should have scored more goals, but we were not hungry enough in front of the goal. But, also, it's always going to be hard to break down a team that defends that deep in their half with everyone behind the ball."
Alfaro, Hernandez and
Luis Fernandez were credited with four shots apiece. Alfaro and
Leonardo Amaral had two on-target shots each.
Wayland is back in the Bowl at 3 p.m. Tuesday to take on Our Lady of the Lake in a doubleheader with the women's team, which plays the Saints at 1.
