Alexandria Hernandez of Wayland Baptist has been named Sooner Athletic Conference Women's Wrestler of the Week.
A sophomore from Orting, Wash., Hernandez was honored after a strong performance in York, Neb., where she won seven of her eight matches, including five pins.Â
On Friday, Hernandez, competing at 155 pounds, went 4-0 at the York Duals, winning by fall over wrestlers from Jarvis Christian and York, by 12-6 decision against Minot State (N.D.), and by forfeit against Texas Wesleyan.
On Saturday at the York Open, Hernandez won her first three matches by fall, defeating wrestlers from Jamestown (N.D.), Midland (Neb.), and Missouri Valley. That set up a match against Kaylynn Albrecht of Baker (Kan.), who is ranked No. 2 in the NAIA. Albrecht won by tech fall, 11-0, leaving Hernandez with a second-place finish.
Ranked the equivalent of 28
th in the NAIA, Wayland lost duals to No. 9 Texas Wesleyan, 29-20, and York, ranked the equivalent of 35
th, 30-18, while defeating Jarvis Christian, ranked the equivalent of 30
th, 30-4, and Minot State (N.D.), 25-7. Wayland picked up a forfeit win against the University of St. Mary (Kan.), ranked the equivalent of 35
th.
WBU next competes in a dual against No. 15 Oklahoma City University at 2 p.m. in Moore, Okla. The Pioneer men also wrestle No. 19 OCU at 2 p.m.
