Second-half letdown sinks Flying Queens

BETHANY, Okla. – The Wayland Baptist Flying Queens posted their fewest points of the season as they fell to Southwestern Christian in Sooner Athletic Conference play here Saturday afternoon, 67-48.

In a game that was tied at halftime, Wayland (12-9, 8-7 SAC) was outscored 21-9 in the third quarter and 21-14 in the fourth as the Lady Eagles (11-10, 9-7) secured the regular-season sweep of the Queens. SCU won on Dec. 1 in Plainview, 81-77 in overtime.

The 48 points were the fewest for the Queens since early in the 2019 season when they lost to No. 3 Oklahoma City, 70-46. Wayland's lowest point total this season had been 55 against then No. 20 Mid-America Christian on Dec. 3, although that came in a one-point win.

Wayland hit just 9-of-32 (28 percent) of its field goals in the second half, including 2-of-14 (14 percent) from 3-point range. The Queens shot a season-low eight free throws, making three (38 percent).

Kaitlyn Edgemon recorded her third double-double of the season with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Jenna Cooper-Jackson added 13 points, while Taylor Houston chipped in seven and six rebounds.

SCU was led in scoring by Christina Jenkins with 17 followed by Tresha Yager with 10. Lauren Wade got nine points and 14 boards while Jayden Mason ended with eight points and 11 assists.

Both teams turned the ball over 10 times each.

The Queens play their next three games in Hutcherson Center, starting at 6 p.m. Tuesday against Oklahoma-Panhandle State (2-16, 2-13), which fell to Mid-America Christian on Saturday, 86-49. WBU defeated the Lady Aggies earlier this season, 84-54.
