Plainview, Texas – The Wayland Baptist women's volleyball team used a pair of outstanding performances by
Selma Sutaj and
Elizabeth Wirth to run their winning streak to three matches with a 3-0 victory over Langston Saturday afternoon at the Hutcherson Center in Plainview, Texas.
The Pioneers took control of the first set as they raced out to a 9-3 lead and then scored six of the last seven points in the set to win 25-10. The second set was no different as the Pioneers again started the set on fire by scoring the first six points to grab an early 6-0 advantage. The Pioneers pushed the lead to 19-9 before the Lions put together a 5-0 run to cut the lead to 19-14, but Wayland slammed the door shut on the uprising by scoring the last six points of the set to earn a 25-14 win.
The third set started with the Lions showing life as they ran out to a 4-1 lead before Wayland put together an 8-0 run to take a 9-5 advantage as they never looked back by scoring the last four out of five points to win the set 25-11 and get the match victory.
The Pioneers led in every statistical category as they finished with a .452 hitting percentage, which included a .619 percentage in the first set. They also had 40 total kills with 13 aces. Wayland also played outstanding defense as they had four blocks with 37 digs.
"Today's match was an improvement over last night," stated head coach James Giacomazzi. "We had more determination to stay focused. Our goal was to minimize the mistakes on our side of the net. We did a great job in the first set. We posted 14 kills in 21 attempts and had a .619 hitting percentage. Our serve receive was very good in the first set. Our next challenge is to stay focused enough to complete three games with mental toughness and concentration."
