Spencer, Bellfield double down in win over Aggies

Well-rounded offense propelled Wayland Baptist to another win Tuesday night at Hutcherson Center as the Pioneers claimed their sixth consecutive Sooner Athletic Conference victory, 103-67 over Oklahoma-Panhandle State.

Six players scored in double figures and a seventh was one point short as Wayland (16-6, 11-5 SAC), ranked the equivlanet of 39th in the NAIA, rolled over the short-handed Aggies (2-20, 1-15) by scoring 103 points for the third time this season, twice in the last two games.

Reece Spencer and D'Michael Bellfield both logged their second double-doubles of the season, with Spencer getting 16 points and 11 rebounds off the bench and Bellfield (6-of-8 FGs) 14 and 10. Spencer and Josh Servantez, who also came off the bench for his 14 points, nailed four 3-pointers apiece as Wayland went 14-of-33 (42 percent) from deep. It was the Pioneers' most 3s since also hitting 14 in the season-opener.

Dylan McDougal chipped in three 3s and tied Spencer for high-point honors with 16. RJ Mason recorded 14 points and a season-best eight assists, and Tedrick Wolfe got 10 points.

Wayland, which defeated OPSU Dec. 15 in Goodwell, 89-61, pounded the Aggies on the boards, 52-19. OPSU managed just once offensive rebound, 17 fewer than the Pioneers. Manny Crump pulled down nine rebounds, five on the offensive end.

OPSU played with just seven as the Aggies were without a handful of players, including the NAIA's top scorer, Rayquan Elliott, who reportedly was sick.

Wayland returns to the Hutch at 7:45 p.m. Thursday against Central Christian (6-16, 4-12), a team the Pioneers – then ranked No. 16 – fell to in Kansas earlier this season, 69-62. It was a season-worst offensive showing for WBU.

If the Pioneers can avenge that loss against the Tigers, it would set up a showdown between the SAC's first- and second-place teams when Wayland hosts No. 3 Langston (21-1, 15-1) at 4 p.m. Saturday in the Hutch. The Lions won in Oklahoma on Dec. 12, 86-74.
