The Sooner Athletic Conference has named Wayland Baptist's
Reece Spencer as SAC Oklahoma Ford Dealers Men's Basketball Player of the Week.
Spencer – a 6-foot-5 sophomore guard from Porter, Texas, in his first season at Wayland after attending Houston Baptist and Weatherford College – was recognized for helping the Pioneers to two road wins, the team's ninth and 10
th consecutive victories. In a 90-84 win over Oklahoma City, Spencer scored 20 points before hitting 22 – two off his season-high – in a 97-76 victory over John Brown (Ark.). He made 8-of-10 field goals, including 2-of-3 3-pointers, against JBU and ended the week shooting 72 percent (13-of-18) from the field and 88 percent (14-of-16) from the free-throw line. Spencer also grabbed three steals against the Golden Eagles and averaged 4½ rebounds.
Wayland's 10-game win streak is the longest for the Pioneers since 1990-91. The team can match that 12-game streak with wins in their final two regular-season games at home against Science & Arts of Oklahoma at 8 p.m. Thursday and Texas Wesleyan at 4 p.m. Saturday.
Spencer is the second Pioneer honored as SAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week this season, after
D'Michael Bellfield was recognized Jan. 16-22.
WBU is ranked the equivalent of 31
st in the NAIA. The Pioneers are 20-6 on the season and 15-5 for second place in the conference.
