McPHERSON, Kan. – The Wayland Baptist baseball team earned its first Sooner Athletic Conference wins of the season here Friday afternoon, rolling over Central Christian, 20-2 and 20-3.
The 20 runs were a season-high and the most for the Pioneers in more than two years, since Wayland defeated McMurry, 21-8, on March 2, 2021, in Abilene.
The Pioneers (15-10, 2-3 SAC) benefited from a pair of complete-game pitching efforts from
Ty Jackson and
Branin Seibert, who both struck out seven in their seven innings of work.
In the opener, Jackson (5-1) allowed four hits and no walks as the Pioneers, who pounded out 17 hits, jumped out to a 5-0 first-inning lead. Wayland was up 12-1 before exploding for eight runs in the sixth.
Three Pioneers –
Hayden Ingram,
Jake Green and
Samuel Fabian – produced three hits apiece. Ingram scored three runs, Green homered and doubled while driving in four runs and scoring twice, and Fabian had two doubles, three RBIs and scored twice.
Arturo Disla and
Cooper Jauz both had doubles among their two hits as Jauz logged three RBIs and Disla two RBIs.
In the second game, WBU scored six runs in the second and led 11-3 after five then blew it wide open with a five-run sixth and four-run seventh.
The Pioneers recorded 16 hits in this one with five players gaining two hits each, including Green, Jauz and Ingram, who also had three steals and scored twice.
Justin Porter and
Jack Kolich also logged two hits, with Porter homering and getting three RBIs. Disla homered.
Seibert (1-0), in his first start of the season, scattered six hits and walked four.
The teams meet for the series finale at noon Saturday.
