Plainview, TX – The Pioneers and the Our Lady of the Lake Saints tipped off the 2024-25 season in exciting fashion Friday night with a final score of 82-80 in favor of OLLU.
Wayland jumped out to a 14-0 lead with suffocating defense and hot shooting from the field.
Dylan McDougal opened the scoring on a layup off of a nice assist pass by
Niko Noumeros with 19:17 left in the first half.
Brett Leach quickly followed that up with a steal and a layup. Two free throws by Dylan extended the Pioneer lead to 6-0 and then consecutive three pointers by
James Lee and
Quenton Coleman gave Wayland a 12-0 lead. The lead expanded to 14 points on another layup by McDougal. Our Lady of the Lake scored their first points with 15:07 left in the half on a three pointer.
The Saints made a run of their own and most of the remainder of the half the Pioneers maintained a single digit lead. OLLU made three pointer at the buzzer to go into the half with a 39-38 lead.
The second half was very similar to the first 20 minutes as the Pioneers retook the lead and extended their advantage to 12 points with 14:42 remaining in the game. The Saints began to chip away at the lead took their largest lead of 5 points with 5:11 left to play. The Pioneers battled back and regained the lead, 77-75, on a three pointer by freshman
Julian Perez with 3:23 remaining. However, the Saints took the lead again with 2:16 left to play and the closest Wayland could get from that time on was one point on several occasions.
The Pioneers had three players in double figures, with
Dylan McDougal leading the way with 17 points.
Niko Noumeros posted a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
James Lee scored 13 points and
Brett Leach added 10.
Kabine Kaba pulled down 9 rebounds along with 4 points and
Jaxon Recer added 7 rebounds and 6 points.
Julian Perez contributed 9 points in his collegiate debut.
The Pioneers travel to Salina, Kansas to participate in the Kansas Wesleyan Classic November 1
st and 2
nd. The opponent Friday is Bethel (KS) College at 4:00 PM and Saturday WBU will face Kansas Wesleyan University at 8:00 PM.
