Pioneers Take Down #1 Langston in Sooner Athletic Conference Opener

Plainview, TX – The Pioneers opened Sooner Athletic Conference play by hosting the #1 team in NAIA, the Langston Lions. The Wayland Baptist student section was packed and loud and helped boost the home team. In a back and forth affair in which there were 6 lead changes and the score was tied 10 times, Wayland Baptist eventually came out on top with a 71-63 victory.

WBU opened the game with an early 7-2 lead in the first two minutes of the game thanks to layups from James Lee and Niko Noumeros and a three pointer by Kabine Kaba. The Lions came back to take a seven  point lead, their largest of the game, with 9:54 left in the first half.  The Pioneers tied the game at 31 with 3:15 left in the half on a 3 pointer by Quenton Coleman. When the buzzer sounded to end the first half, Wayland held a 37-34 lead.

Two free throws and a made layup by freshman guard Julian Perez gave the Pioneers a 46-40 lead with 16:11 left in the game. Wayland took the largest lead of the game, 52-43 on a layup by Dylan McDougal with 12:19 left to play. Langston fought back to take a 63-61 lead at the 2:07 mark. A layup by Niko Noumeros tied the game at with 1:50 left. Quenton Coleman made a 3 pointer with 1:04 left to play to give the Pioneers a 66-63 lead. Coleman followed that up with a steal and two made free throws to give Wayland a 5  point lead, 68-63, with only 37 seconds remaining in the game.

The Pioneers had three players score in double figures, led by Niko Noumeros with a season high 17 points. Noumeros also hauled in a team high 7 rebounds and dished out 3 assists. Quenton Coleman scored 13 points and a team high 3 steals and Dylan McDougal contributed 12 points and 6 rebounds to the victory.

James Lee had 7 points and 5 assists, Julian Perez scored 9 points along with 3 rebounds and 2 assists. Kabine Kaba had 4 points and 4 rebounds. Adeola Seun scored 3 points along with 2 rebounds and Joshua Tucker contributed 3 points, a rebound and a steal. Brett Leach scored 2 points and had 2 rebounds and an assist and Jaxon Recer had 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 point.

The Pioneers host Central Christian Saturday at 4:00 PM in the Hutcherson Center.
