Plainview, TX – Central Christian College came into town with an undefeated record (5-0, 1-0) facing a Wayland Baptist team that had just knocked off Langston University, the #1 team in the nation. The game was a back and forth affair throughout, with 17 lead changes and the game tied 9 times, before Central Christian escaped with a 60-58 win.
There were 9 lead changes in the first half in which Wayland led by as many as 5 points with 13:45 left in the half and Central Christian led by 9 with 3:52 left to play before the Pioneers fought back to within 4 as the Tigers took a 34-30 lead into halftime.
The Pioneers scored the first six points of the second half on a lay-up by
Quenton Coleman, a jumper by
Julian Perez and two made free throws by
Kabine Kaba, to take a 36-34 lead with 18:14 remaining in the game. From that point, the game featured ties and 8 lead changes. At the 3:38 mark, Central Christian took a one point lead (53-52) on two made free throws and the Tigers never trailed again.
Wayland cut the Tigers lead to 60-58 with 50 seconds left and came up with a big defensive stop to have regain possession with 20 seconds remaining. The Pioneers had two three point attempts that failed to go in and Central Christian escaped with a two point win.
Quenton Coleman scored 15 points for Wayland Baptist.
Julian Perez had 12 points and pulled down 7 rebounds.
Adeola Seun scored 11 points and had 6 rebounds while
Niko Noumeros had 7 points and 7 rebounds.
Jaxon Recer also contributed 6 rebounds.
The Pioneers host the University of North Texas (Dallas) on Thursday at Hutcherson Center with an 8:00 pm tipoff.
