Fort Worth, TX – 5
th seed Wayland Baptist traveled to Fort Worth to take on 4
th seed Texas Wesleyan in the quarterfinals of the Sooner Athletic Conference postseason tournament. The two teams were tied 2-2 at the end of regulation. Two overtime periods failed to change the score. The Pioneers claimed the win in penalty kicks, 3-2, to advance to the conference semifinals.
Jamol Williams opened the scoring with a goal in the 27
th minute with an assist from
Francis Motsi.
Vito Zatikyan gave the Pioneers a 2-0 lead with his goal in the 35
th minute.
The Rams scored in the 43
rd minute and tied the game up with a goal in the 65
th minute.
Defense ruled the day for the remainder of the second half and through 20 minutes of extra time as neither team was able to score another goal and then it came down to penalty kicks.
With the penalty kicks tied at 2-2, Niklas Theil hit the game-winner into the back of the goal to give the Pioneers the hard-fought victory and a ticket to the conference semifinals.
Alex Neri had 8 saves for Wayland Baptist to help secure the win.
The Pioneers will face #1 seed Mid-America Christian in Oklahoma City on Saturday, November 9 at 7:00 PM.
