Pioneers Win at Texas Wesleyan 67-64

Fort Worth, TX – The Wayland Baptist Pioneers defeated the Texas Wesleyan Rams 67-64 to extend their Sooner Athletic Conference winning streak to 6 consecutive games.

In another SAC slugfest, the Pioneers took a slim 31-30 lead into halftime. The first half featured 8 lead changes and having the score tied 4 times. Wayland's largest lead in the half was by 5 points with 9:27 remaining. Texas Wesleyan's largest lead was by 4 with 16:17 left in the half.

The Pioneers never surrendered the lead in the second half, but the outcome of the game was in question until the final buzzer sounded. Wayland took their largest lead of 11 points with 17:55 left in the game, but a Texas Wesleyan run quickly brought the game within 5 points and the remainder of the game was closely contested. In the end, the Pioneers outscored the Rams 36-34 in the 2nd half and won by 3 points.

The Wayland defense held TWU to only 37% from the field in the second half.

Quenton Coleman, the reigning NAIA Offensive Player of the Week, led all scorers with 22 points, including making 12 of 13 free throws. Coleman also led the Pioneers with 6 rebounds.

James Lee scored a season high 14 points off the bench and added 3 rebounds. Julian Perez contributed 8 points. Adeola Seun scored 6 points, 5 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. Niko Noumeros, Kabine Kaba and Brett Leach each scored 4 points. Kaba also added 4 rebounds. Josh Tucker scored 3 points and had 2 rebounds and Dylan McDougal added 2 points, a rebound and an assist.

The Pioneers sit atop the Sooner Athletic Conference with a 7-1 record. They travel to Chickasha, Oklahoma to take on the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma Saturday at 4:00pm.
