Pioneers Softball Dominate Arlington Baptist in Game One Saturday; Drop Game 2 to Split Doubleheader

Arlington, Texas – The Pioneer Softball squad split their Saturday doubleheader on the road against the Patriots of Arlington Baptist to go 1-3 on the weekend road trip. The Pioneers handled business in game one by winning 9-1, but fell short in game 2, 8-0.

Wayland Baptist gave up the first run in game one after Arlington Baptist drove a double to left center field that scored a runner from second. The Pioneers would answer back immediately after Aaleah Rodriguez singled to center to score Abcde Garcia and tie the game up at 1. Garcia would then step to the plate in the top of the 4th with the bases loaded and one out. Garcia ripped a single to left to score two runs and give the Pioneers a 3-1 lead. Rodriguez followed up with a sacrifice fly to right field to score another run for the Pioneers and make it a 4-1 game. The Pioneers got their final run of the 4th inning after Arianna Zubia smashed a single to center to score Addy Rich – making it 5-1 Pioneers after the top of the 4th inning. In the top of the 6th, Rodriguez tapped a sacrifice groundout to the pitcher to score another runner from the third to make it 6-1 Pioneers. Berkely Bradley drove an RBI single in the top of the 7th to score a runner from third to make it 7-1. After Reagan Davis scored on a passed ball to give the Pioneers an 8-1 lead, Bradley would score on another wild pitch a few batters later to clinch the game, 9-1.

Amber Poorbaugh got the start for game one and was solid in her outing. She pitched 3 innings, allowing 1 run, 2 hits, 2 walks, and striking out one Patriot batter. Addy Rich pitched lights out in relief – throwing 4 scoreless innings, allowing 3 hits, one walk, and striking out 3 batters.

Abcde Garcia went 2-3 with 2 RBI, 2 runs scored, and a hit by pitch. Aaleah Rodriguez went 1-2 with 3 RBIs, 2 sacrifices to score runs, and a base hit. Arianna Zubia went 2-4 with an RBI. Mikayla Carrillo went 2-4 with an RBI.

Game two was a tough one for the Pioneers as the offense couldn't quite get any momentum going, and the defense committed 4 errors over the course of the 5-inning game. The Pioneers had a couple of baserunners reach in the 1st inning, but they were unable to scratch any runs across. The Patriots then went on to score 6 runs in the top of the 2nd after two Pioneer errors were committed in the inning. After a few scoreless frames, the Patriots scored two more runs in the bottom of the 5th to seal the game, 8-0.

Clarissa Rejino made the start in game 2 for Wayland Baptist – pitching 1.2 innings, allowing 6 runs, only one earned run, 5 hits, no walks, and one strikeout. Kaci Rivera relieved Rejino, and she went 2.2 innings, giving up 2 runs but none earned, one hit, one walk, and one strikeout.

The Pioneers only mustered three hits in game two – one each by Zubia, Garcia, and Bradley. Mikayla Carrillo and Madison Martinez each drew walk, but neither were able to come around and score.

The Pioneers will compete in their first ever Sooner Athletic Conference game on Friday at the University of Science and Arts (Okla.) in Chickasha, Oklahoma. They will play in a doubleheader on Friday with first pitch of game one set for 2:00 PM.
