Pioneers Win First SAC Series in Program History After Wednesday Doubleheader Split Against Texas Wesleyan

Plainview, Texas – The Pioneers split their Wednesday doubleheader and took 3 of 4 from Texas Wesleyan to win their first Sooner Athletic Conference series in program history. Wayland Baptist fell short in game one 6-0, but they bounced back for a comeback win game two, 8-7.

Wayland Baptist fell behind in the 1st inning after the Rams hit an RBI single to center field to make it 1-0. The Rams then made it 2-0 after an RBI double in the top of the 3rd. Texas Wesleyan scratched across one more run in the 4th, two in the 5th, and one in the 6th to take a 6-0 lead over the Pioneers. Reagan Davis hit a leadoff triple in the bottom of the 7th, but the Pioneers were unable to bring her home for a run and fell in game one, 6-0.

Addy Rich went 5.1 innings, allowing 5 earned runs, 9 hits, 1 walk, and a strikeout. Amber Poorbaugh pitched 1.2 innings in relief, allowing no runs, 1 hit, and a walk.

Davis and Arianna Zubia had the only two hits of game one for the Pioneers. Abcde Garcia reached base twice by walks, and she had a stolen base. Aaleah Rodriguez reached on a hit by pitch, and she also stole a bag.

Wayland Baptist fell behind 4-0 after the top of the 1st in game two due to a few defensive miscues. However, the Pioneers answered immediately in their half of the 1st that was sparked by and RBI double from Davis and an RBI single by Berkley Bradley.

After the Rams got a run to take a 5-4 lead, the Pioneers responded in the 3rd after scoring three runs on a few errors by the Rams defense to take a 7-5 lead. The Pioneers got a much-needed insurance run in the bottom of the 6th that proved to be crucial in the top of the 7th, because Texas Wesleyan scored three runs to make it an 8-7 ballgame. Poorbaugh had two on, two out, and she escaped the jam by getting a lazy pop fly in foul territory that was caught by Bradley to clinch the 8-7 win for the Pioneers.

Amber Poorbaugh threw 7 innings, allowing 4 earned runs on 10 hits, and two walks. She picked up her 3rd win on the season.

Davis finished 2-4 with an RBI, two runs scored, and a stolen base. Bradley finished 1-3 with two RBIs, two runs scored, and a stolen base. Jadyn Fernandez finished game two going 1-3 with an RBI, two runs scored, and a stolen base. Poorbaugh helped herself out at the plate by going 2-3 with an RBI and a double.

The Pioneers will travel to Langston, Oklahoma this weekend for a 4-game Sooner Athletic Conference series against the Langston Lions. The first pitch for game one of the doubleheader on Friday is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
