Pioneers Fall to 11th Ranked Angelo State in Midweek Non-conference Game

San Angelo, Texas – The Pioneers dropped a midweek contest on the road against 11th ranked NCAA Division 2 Angelo State University, 14-2. The contest was added to the schedule after the Pioneer's 4-game series at LSU-Alexandria was canceled due to weather.

Wayland Baptist got off to a slow start in this one after the Rams struck out the side in the top of the 1st and scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 1st that included an RBI triple and an RBI double. Angelo State then got one more run in the bottom of the 2nd and two more runs in the bottom of the 3rd to make it 7-0.

The Pioneers bats woke up in the top of the 4th when Samuel Fabian hit a solo home to center, his 10th home run this season, to make it 7-1. Cooper Jauz then hit a two-out triple to right field to put a runner in scoring position, and he scored after Gustavo Nava smacked an RBI single to right to make it 7-2.

The Pioneers couldn't get anything rolling the rest of the afternoon from the plate, while the Rams had two big scoring innings to take a 14-2 lead. The Rams scored three runs in the bottom of the 4th and four runs in the bottom of the 6th to take command of this game. The Pioneers got back-to-back hits by Brayden Peyton and Vann Johnson to lead off the top of the 7th, but a strikeout and a double play eliminated the threat and ended the game, 14-2.

Fabian went 1-3 with a solo home run. Cooper Jauz went 2-3 with a triple and a run scored. Nava went 1-1 with an RBI and a walk.

Over six innings defensively for Wayland Baptist, the Pioneer pitchers allowed 11 earned runs, 12 hits, 6 walks, and 4 strikeouts. Riley Watson, a Pioneer outfielder making his first appearance on the mound this season, was the only Pioneer pitcher to not allow any runs this afternoon.

The Pioneers will continue Sooner Athletic Conference play this weekend with a 3-game series on the road against Mid-America Christian University (Okla.). The series will feature a Friday doubleheader and a single game on Saturday. Game one of the doubleheader on Friday will begin at 1:00 PM.
