Plainview – The Pioneers dominated the University of the Southwest 14-3 in a 7-inning run-rule to end an 11-game skid and wrap up their 2024 home schedule on a positive note.
Wayland Baptist got a 1-2-3 inning to begin the afternoon, and they followed it up with 5 runs in the bottom of the 1
st on no hits after the Mustangs starting pitcher hit 4 batters with pitches and walked 3. The Pioneers added a run in the bottom of the 2
nd after
Brayden Peyton smacked a single to left to score
Cooper Jauz and make it a 6-0 game.
In the bottom of the 3
rd, the Pioneers extended their lead to 8-0 after Jauz ripped a two-run single to right but was thrown out at second base trying to stretch it to a double.
Gustavo Nava then drove a sacrifice fly to left to score Polanco from third to make it 9-0, WBU.
Felix Polanco extended the Pioneer lead to 12-0 in the bottom of the 4
th after crushing a 3-run bomb, his 10
th homer of the season, off the top of the Hutcherson Center in left center field. The Mustangs scored their first two run on the afternoon in the top of the 6
th after a sacrifice fly to center field and two RBI singles to right made it a 12-3 ballgame heading to the bottom of the 6
th.
In the bottom of the 6
th, the Pioneers loaded the bases with one out for
Arcadio Frausto who deposited a single to right to score two runs and make it 14-3.
Collin Arnold threw a 1-2-3 scoreless top of the 7
th to slam the door on the Mustangs and secure the 14-3 run-run victory for the Pioneers.
Polanco finished 3 for 4 with a homer, two RBIs, 4 runs, a hit by pitch, and a stolen base. Frausto went 2 for 2 with 3 RBIs, a run scored, and reached three times on hit by pitches.
Brayden Peyton went 2 for 3 with a double, two RBIs, and a hit by pitch. Jauz finished 1 for 3 with two RBIs, two runs scored, and two walks.
Samuel Fabian finished 1 for 3 with two RBIs, and a run scored.
Grayson Soukup got the start in today's final home game for the Pioneers going 3 scoreless innings allowing one hit, two walks, and a strikeout.
Wellington Vargas and Conner Leach each followed with a scoreless inning. The three runs were charged to
William Flowers in his 0.2 inning.
Collin Arnold threw 1.1 perfect innings allowing no baserunners.
Wayland Baptist will travel to Bethany, Oklahoma to take on the Eagles of Southwestern Christian University to begin the final 6-game road trip of the season for the Pioneers. The 3-game weekend series against Southwester Christian will feature a Friday doubleheader and one nine-inning game on Saturday. First pitch for game one on Friday is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
