Oklahoma City, Oklahoma – The Pioneers battled in their Friday doubleheader at 2
nd ranked Oklahoma City University, but ultimately were shutout in both games after tough Stars pitching. Wayland Baptist lost game one 3-0, and fell short in five innings in game two, 9-0.
Wayland Baptist fell behind early after the Stars hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 1
st to make it 1-0 early, added a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 2
nd to make it 2-0, and hit an RBI single in the bottom of the 4
th to make it 3-0 to cap off their scoring for game one. Wayland Baptist was held hitless until the top of the 4th when
Arianna Zubia singled up the middle to put a runner on with two outs for the Pioneers, but they were unable to bring her around to score. Wayland Baptist battled hard in game one but fell short 3-0.
Addy Rich made the start in game one for Wayland Baptist, and she continued her solid stretch of pitching by limiting the 2
nd ranked team in the country to two earned runs over 6 innings, no walks, and a strikeout. Rich now has a season record of 7-5 and an ERA of 2.72 over 92.2 innings.
Wayland Baptist opened game two with a leadoff single by
Reagan Davis followed by a Zubia single to center to put runners on first and second with one out, but the Pioneers stranded them on base and the game remained scoreless. OCU opened the scoring in game two with a two-run double and a two-run homer to make it 4-0 after one inning of play. After a couple of scoreless frames, the Stars knocked in 5 more runs in the bottom of the 3
rd started by a two-run homer and an RBI single. Zubia reached again for Wayland Baptist in the top of the 4
th, but the Pioneers failed to bring her in and remained down 9-0. The Pioneers went down 1-2-3 in the top of the 5
th to end game two with OCU winning 9-0.
Clarissa Rejino got the start in game two for the Pioneers allowing 8 runs over 2.1 innings with 3 walks and no strikeouts.
Amber Poorbaugh pitched 1.2 inning in relief allowing an unearned run, no walks, and two strikeouts. The Pioneer pitching staff didn't get any run support, but Zubia finished 2-2 with a couple of base hits.
The Pioneers will look to bounce back tomorrow against 2
nd ranked Oklahoma City University with a doubleheader to conclude the 4-game weekend road series. First pitch for game one of the doubleheader is set for 12:00 PM.
