The women's soccer team opened the 2024 season with a home victory Saturday evening against the Jarvis Christian Univerisity Bulldogs.
The Pioneers were aggressive early but failed to capitalize on some scoring opportunities and trailed the Bulldogs 1-0 at halftime.
The second half was a different story as Wayland scored two goals and goal keeper
Ava Kent (8 saves)Â and the Pioneer defense held Jarvis Christian scoreless.
The Pioneers tied the game on a goal by
Elaina Barrientes at the 54:03 mark. Barrientes' goal was assisted by
Camila Zavala.
Just a little over three minutes later,
Mallory Perez gave the Pioneers the lead on a goal assisted by
Elaina Barrientes.
Solid defense by Wayland made the 2-1 lead stand up the rest of the way and the Pioneers secured their season opening victory at home.
The Pioneers travel to Hobbs, NM Wednesday to face the University of the Southwest at 2:00 PM.
