Plainview, TX – The Pioneers started off 2005 with a bang as they defeated College of the Ozarks 86-69. Wayland Baptist (9-5, 9-1) remains in first place in Sooner Athletic Conference play with the win.
The first seven minutes of the game was extremely close as the score was tied twice and there were 6 lead changes. The Pioneers took a 14-13 lead with 13:03 left in the first half, on a three pointer by
Julian Perez, and never trailed again. Wayland extended their lead to 15 points, 40-25, when
Quenton Coleman made a three pointer to end the first half. Coleman finished the half with a game high 24 points.
The Pioneers maintained control of the game for most of the second half, although the Bobcats were able to cut the deficit to 8 points at the 12:35 mark when they made a 3 pointer to cut the lead to 55-47. Wayland quickly countered as
Quenton Coleman made a lay-up, was fouled and converted the free throw to give the Pioneers a 58-47 lead with 12:07 remaining in the game. WBU took their largest lead of the game when Coleman hit a jumper to extend the lead to 20 points, 73-53, with 6:59 left to play.
Quenton Coleman led all scorers with 34 points, making 7 of 11 three-point attempts. Coleman also contributed 5 rebounds and 3 assists.
Brett Leach and
James Lee each scored 10 points for the Pioneers. Leach added 3 rebounds and 3 assists, while Lee had 3 rebounds, 3 assists and a game high 5 steals.
Julian Perez scored 9 points and nabbed 3 rebounds while
Dylan McDougal scored 6 points, going 2 for 2 from three. McDougal also grabbed 5 rebounds.
Joshua Tucker contributed to the win with 5 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists.
Kabine Kaba also scored 5 points and grabbed a game high 7 rebounds.
Adeola Seun added 4 points and
Paetyn Walker scored 3 points.
Jaxon Recer returned to action after being out with an injury and contributed 3 assists, 2 rebounds and a steal.
The Pioneers return to action Saturday at 4:00 pm as they take on John Brown University in the Hutcherson Center. This game has been tabbed as the Sooner Athletic Conference Game of the Week.
