Bartlesville, Okla. – The Pioneer Softball squad opened their 2025 campaign by splitting Friday's Opening doubleheader at Oklahoma Wesleyan. The Pioneers fell short in game one by a score of 9-1 in six innings, but they responded nicely in game two with a 7-2 victory.
GAME ONE
Wayland Baptist opened the scoring in the top of the 1
st after senior
Brooklyn Araujo scored the first run of the season on an Eagle error, making it 1-0 Pioneers. The Eagles answered back with a run in the bottom of the 1
st to even it up at 1-1. OKWU broke it open in the bottom of the 2
nd after scoring three runs on four hits, including a bases-clearing double that made it 4-1.
The Eagles scratched across one run in both the 3
rd and 4
th innings before scoring the two final runs in the bottom 6
th to defeat the Pioneers 9-1 in six innings.
Araujo finished 1 for 3 with a run scored.
Mikayla Carrillo went 1 for 3 with a double.
Arianna Zubia and
Amber Poorbaugh recorded the other two hits for the Pioneers in game one.
GAME TWO
Wayland Baptist scored first to begin the second game – taking a 1-0 lead on a Poorbaugh RBI single. The Pioneer offense found their spark in the top of the 3
rd, and it started when
Christian Moyers drilled a two-run double to make it 3-1, WBU.
Kailee Sanchez followed up with a two-run single to give the Pioneers a 5-1 lead over the Eagles.
Neither team could get a run across over the next few innings, but the Pioneer offense struck again in the top of the 6
th with another RBI single from Poorbaugh followed by a sacrifice fly from Moyers to make it 7-1, WBU. The Eagles manufactured a run in the bottom of the 7
th, but their deficit was too much as the Pioneers secured their first win of the season, 7-2.
Adriana Armstrong made the start in game two for the Pioneers, and she did a great job preventing the Eagle offense from getting anything going. Armstrong's final line shows: 7.0 innings pitched, two runs, nine strikeouts, and four walks. Armstrong's record for the season is now 1-0.
Poorbaugh finished game two going 3 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Moyers went 1 for 3 with a double, a sacrifice fly, three RBIs, and a run scored. Sanchez finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Zubia went 2 for 4 with a run scored.
UP NEXT
The Pioneers and Eagles will face off in another doubleheader on Saturday, February 1
st to wrap up this Opening Weekend four-game set. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
