Bartlesville, Okla. – The Pioneers couldn't overcome a strong Oklahoma Wesleyan offense this afternoon – dropping both games of the doubleheader to conclude the Opening Weekend of the 2025 season. The Pioneers fell short in game one by a score of 12-6, and they couldn't garner a comeback in game two – falling 10-2 in six innings.
GAME ONE
Wayland Baptist teed off on Oklahoma Wesleyan for six runs in the top of the first inning. After
Mikayla Carrillo scored the first run of the game for the Pioneers on an Eagle error,
Amber Poorbaugh followed that up with an RBI single to right to make it 2-0, WBU.
Berkley Bradley proceeded to drill a two-run single to right that pushed the Pioneer's lead to 4-0.
Addy Rich added another run for the Pioneers with an RBI single that made it 5-0. Carrillo would bat for the second time in the inning, and she took a hit by pitch that scratched across the final run of the inning for the Pioneers.
The Eagles answered back quickly with six runs over the next three innings to even the score up at 6-6 after three innings of play. The two teams failed to score another run over few innings, but Oklahoma Wesleyan broke through for six runs in the bottom of the 6
th inning to take a commanding 12-6 lead over the Pioneers – which is how game one would come to an end.
Bradley finished 1 for 3 with two RBIs, a hit by pitch, and a run scored.
Makayla Sanchez finished 1 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored.
GAME TWO
Oklahoma Wesleyan got the scoring started in game two with three runs in the bottom of the 1
st. The Pioneers were shut out their first two innings at the plate, but Carrillo snapped that skid with an RBI triple to score
Cayman Ivins from first and make it a 3-1 ballgame. The Eagles got the run back in the bottom of the 4
th to increase their lead to 4-1. The Eagles continued their hot hitting in the bottom of the 5
th with three more runs to make it 7-1, OKWU.
History was made for the Pioneers in the top of the 6
th inning when senior
Brooklyn Araujo crushed a solo shot to left center field for the first home run in Pioneer Softball program history.
The Eagles answered with three runs in the bottom of the 6
th, which promptly ended the game. The Pioneers fell short in game two, 10-2.
Araujo finished 1 for 3 with the solo home run – her first of the season and first in program history. Carrillo finished 1 for 2 with a triple, an RBI, a walk, a stolen base, and a run scored. Poorbaugh finished game two going 2 for 3 with two singles.
UP NEXT
The Pioneers will have their first home games of the 2025 season on Tuesday, February 4
th when they host the University of the Southwest (NM) for a doubleheader. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 1:00 PM. Game two will follow 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
