Goodwell, Oklahoma – Oklahoma Panhandle State edged the Wayland Baptist Pioneers 67-66 in a tightly contested game Monday night. The game featured eight lead changes, the score was tied nine times and the largest lead by either team was five points. The two teams were tied 25-25 at halftime as both defenses made it difficult for the other team to score. The second half proved to be just as competitive, but the Aggies from OPSU outscored the Pioneers 42-41 to earn the victory.
Both teams shot 43.1% from the field. The Pioneers were 4 of 14 (28.6%) from the three-point line while the Aggies were 2 of 10 (20%). Wayland Baptist held a slight edge on the boards as they out rebounded OPSU 35-28. The biggest differential came at the free throw line as the Aggies shot 34 free throws compared to 16 free throw attempts by the Pioneers.
Quenton Coleman led Wayland in scoring with 25 points. Coleman also had 2 rebounds and 2 assists.
Kabine Kaba was the only other Pioneer in double figures with 10 points. Kaba grabbed a game high 9 rebounds and had 3 blocks.
Joshua Tucker scored 7 points and 2 rebounds.
Julian Perez contributed 6 points and 3 rebounds.
James Lee and
Alex Rojas both scored 5 points and had 2 rebounds. Lee also added 2 assists.
Brett Leach was the second leading rebounder for the Pioneers with 5 boards.
The Pioneers, who hold a 10-2 record in Sooner Athletic Conference play, travel to Oklahoma City Saturday to face Mid-America Christian University at 4:00 PM.
