PLAINVIEW, TX -- Wayland Baptist Volleyball delivered their second straight all-around performance Saturday afternoon at the Hutcherson Center, sweeping John Brown University in straight sets (25-18, 25-18, 25-23) to improve to 10-8 overall and 9-5 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
The Pioneers controlled the match from start to finish, hitting an impressive .274 as a team while limiting John Brown to just .119. Wayland's balanced attack featured four players with at least eight kills, showcasing the team's offensive depth and rhythm.
Senior middle hitter
Fade Ogunbade led the charge with 11 kills on a .529 hitting percentage, adding three block assists and a team-high 12.5 points.
Emma Scott followed closely with nine kills and a blistering .667 hitting clip, while
Carlee Heidebrecht and
Deniz Yileri chipped in eight kills apiece.
Setter
Martyna Lewinska was the catalyst for Wayland's offense, dishing out 40 assists and adding two service aces in a standout performance.
Aubrie Sierra contributed three aces from the service line, helping the Pioneers maintain pressure throughout the match.
Defensively, Wayland was anchored by Heidebrecht and Yileri, who each tallied double-digit digs (12 and 11, respectively), while the front line combined for five team blocks to stifle John Brown's attack.
The Pioneers set the tone early, taking the first set 25-18 behind a strong finish and never looking back. Wayland built on that momentum with its best offensive set of the day in the second, hitting .303 to secure another 25-18 win. The third frame proved tighter, but key kills down the stretch from Ogunbade and Yileri sealed the sweep.
The Pioneers will hit the road next weekend when they face the Stars of Oklahoma City University on Friday night, October 17
th. The match will begin at 6:00 PM.
